The Great Title

So the question is “what if the Great Gatsby had a different title?”. And the other title options given were Trimalchio in West Egg, The High-Bouncing Lover, Gold-Hatted Gatsby, or Among Ash Heaps and Millionaires. Honestly, each one of those titles, in my opinion, are absolutely terrible. Especially Gold-Hatted Gatsby. If any of these were the actual title, I don’t think it would have hurt the book too much, because a book is more than just it’s title. However, the title is the first thing you see and none of these are as epic and eye-catching as what we actually got. For one, it’s simple and the others are somewhat convoluted. Simple titles are easy on the eyes and mind and if I pick up a book with a ridiculous title, I’ll probably be less interested. Also, the title we got sounds like it has scope, sounds like “ooohhhh something happened”, sounds like an epic tale. So I will disagree with Fitzgerald in this regard as the title we got is both simple and epic simultaneously. And the book was a success, so apparently people were fine with the title. Money talks, ladies and gents.
